I discovered Canva to design my logos, flyers and business cards and found a passion for doing the same for other business.

Using design and art to transform spaces is incredibly fulfilling and I’ve been fortunate enough to be involved in projects that utilise other sides of my creativity while learning and collaborating with builders, electricians and other tradespeople.

I could have never got to this stage in my art career without humble beginnings. Friends used to gather at our home and I’d host and facilitate ‘Sip & Paint’ evenings.

I love working on large spaces and getting the opportunity to transform them with my art is magical to me. I’ve worked on murals that vary in size for a range of different businesses from a Jiu-jitsu gym (Artez BJJ, Rotherham), a lash salon (Lashed Leeds), a bar (The Watermark Bar, Leeds), a creative space (Theatre Deli, Sheffield) and currently working on an opticians (Eyeye, Sheffield).

The backgrounds for all my portraits start off as abstract pieces. I’ve always enjoyed the idea of shutting myself off from reality by playing music and grabbing a blank canvas, repurposed MDF or wall and painting whatever my imagination instructs. I use bold colour, texture and experiment with techniques to produce the one-off pieces I create.

I started doing portraits because I realised I had a lot of internalised resentment towards my features and my skintone. As a dark skinned black woman, I’d absorbed a lot of messaging that either celebrated, muted or ridiculed me so that led me to find a way to reclaim some power.
