“I feel most connected to the truest sense of who I am when I have my headphones on and a paintbrush in my hand. I can flow unencumbered by fear or worry and transform a blank space into something meaningful-that Is my superpower!”
-Nicole-Rose
About Nicole-Rose
Nicole-Rose is a Yorkshire-based painter and visual artist born in Zimbabwe. She comes from a family that possesses a wealth of talent including; artists, musicians, authors, educators and creatives of every type therefore inspiration was never in short supply.
Influence
The art she creates is hugely influenced by her upbringing in Zimbabwe along with her experiences as a Black woman in the UK. She has vivid memories of seeing artists showcase their work on roadsides in Zimbabwe displaying an array of intricate & colourful art made from repurposed wood, plastic, scrap metal or clay and that informed her current ethos of reusing, recycling and reclaiming found objects and turning them into her own masterpieces.
Avenue of Escape
Art provided an avenue of escape from the conflicting emotions that came from existing as an African immigrant in the UK who was uncertain of where to call ‘home,’ as she realized she was ‘too British to be Zimbabwean and too Zimbabwean to be British’.
Passion
Nicole-Rose’s work features bold colour (using acrylics) & texture and ranges from abstract art, portraiture to murals. She has transformed spaces such as The Watermark Bar (Leeds), Lashed (Leeds), Theatre Deli (London) & currently Theatre Deli (Sheffield). Nicole-Rose also has a passion for inspiring her community by doing workshops in nursing homes, or inviting people to her home for ‘Sip & Paint’ sessions. “Art should be accessible to everyone and the joy it leaves on people’s faces makes it worthwhile.”
